Hilda

Hilda’s diet consists of lucerne, pumpkin, apples, pears, banana, sweet potato and she loves butternut. She weighs approximately 260 kilograms and shares her enclosure with Herbert.

Pygmy hippos have been classified an endangered species, as it has been estimated that there are around 2,000 pygmy hippos left in the wild, with numbers declining as their habitat is destroyed and they continue to be hunted for bushmeat.

Herbert

Herbert’s diet consists of lucerne, pumpkin, apples, pears, banana, sweet potato and his favourite treat is watermelon. At the ranch we have the Wild Animal Volunteer program. An integral part of our volunteer program is to encourage our volunteers to create unique enrichment ideas for our all our animals, but Herbert and Hilda have a bigger interest in getting together than taking part in the enrichment. He is crazy about the girl next door.
